CARALARGA / MEXIQUE

CARALARGA / MEXICO

CARALARGA is a Mexican workshop very inspired by the raw materials in nature. Ana Holschneider, the founder and designer, and her team of talented artisans seek to preserve the essence of these materials and to enhance their quality by transforming them in high standard jewelry. There are also few large format pieces for some ¨Home Décor¨ projects. CARALARGA one-of-a-kind, handmade, artisanal designs result in high-quality pieces that feature the best of every natural element and highlight their admiration for simplicity. The designer likes things the way they come and believes that a simple world is a better world.

Ana was born and raised in Mexico City. After promoting Mexican design in Hong Kong, she and her family moved back to Mexico and to Queretaro more precisely. There, she had the fortune to meet Socorro who is a master artisan and to access local materials, such as the 100% cotton thread which inspired her to start a jewelry line with natural fibers instead of metal. Destiny provided also the space, a small atelier based in an old textile factory dated from 1846, “El Hercules”, in Querétaro. All this, plus the admiration she has always had for the quality of Mexican handmade products, and the people who make them, motivated her to start this project with a first collection launched in 2015.

CARALARGA uses natural fibers such as cotton, sisal and other weeds that have been rediscovered like Sanseveria or “mother in law’s tongue” from Yucatán. The iconic material of the brand is the Mexican cotton in its natural creamy color. In fact, they use the shorter fibers that are not needed for the regular production of textiles. At the factory, Fransisco, who has been working at the yarn area for more than 20 years, helps the team to choose the thickness of the thread that will subsequently be taken to the gummed process to acquire its texture. When this process is finished, the thread is stored on a giant steel reel. This way it prevents from tangling. Later, the thread is cut and rolled into a big ¨queso Oaxaca¨ type of ball to make it easier to bring into the workshop. Eventually each bunch of thread is hand brushed for approximately 15-20 minutes until the desired textured is attained and so starts the creative process.

Every piece that CARALARGA produces is 100% handmade. The skilled women artisans dedicate an important part of their time to work the collections. Thanks to the wit, professionalism, compromise, and creativity, of the women artisans collaborating with Ana, the sketched designs can be transformed into high quality, artisan jewellery. Their hands weave the cotton threads into unique bracelets, necklaces or earrings, bringing the value of Mexican traditions and culture to every customer. The brand wants to share the story behind each piece, the development process, its care, and more important, the hands that worked them. This way each CARALARGA piece can be truly understood and fully enjoyed.

CARALARGA, literally “long face”, was inspired by the work of North American ethnic groups based on simplicity so the logo is a tepee, that represents the two capital letters of the designer and founder of the brand: A.H.

CARALARGA has already made appearances in impressive places including Bazaar, Vogue Mexico, Elle, and L’Officiel, to name a few.

Nature, preservation and the beauty of simplicity are the elements that most accurately define the brand.
