This imagery formed an intrinsic, historic part of the Embera and Wounaan tribes shaman's rituals. These traditional ceremonial masks are coming directly from the jungle forest of Panama, in Central America. They are unique decorative pieces handmade by indigenous Indian women from the 'chunga' (black palm tree). Wild animals or imaginary beings, artisans are inspired by their environment and by their beliefs, through which they bring to life a craftsmanship unique in the world.

Through the shamans, people get in contact with “Haï”, which are Nature spirits found in animals just as well as in plants.

After being harvested by the men, palm tree leaves are dried, whitened in the sun and dyed with natural dyes. A fantastic creation work then begins… not only requiring a major artistic sense but also an unrivaled know-how that only the women of the tribe have.

These craftwomen are located in remote and often inaccessible places. Women we enable to keep up living with their families in their traditional habitat, far from big cities, thanks to the additional income from the masks' fair trade.
